Abstract

Introduction: The integration of social media, particularly Twitter, into journalistic work as an information source poses a significant challenge for today's media, whose influence on agenda setting is crucial for the credibility of the journalism profession. Methodology: The research combines qualitative and quantitative approaches to explore the use of Twitter as an information source by media editors and journalists from Spain's leading professional associations, during the last quarter of 2019. Results: Twitter is recognized as an additional information source that requires verification through other channels directly involved in the news. The incorporation of Twitter into journalistic practices is progressive, and the heads of digital media outlets that regularly use it emphasize the necessity of corroborating information obtained from this network. Discussion: The responsibility of the media in verifying content from social networks and its impact on building a trustworthy media agenda is debated. Conclusions: The research concludes that while Twitter has become a valuable informational tool for journalists, its use demands a rigorous verification process to ensure the integrity and credibility of the news, highlighting the importance of verification as a fundamental pillar in the digital information era.
